Pavement Cyclists

Why do cyclists insist on riding at high speed on the pavement and endanger the lives of innocent pedestrians.
I personally have no problem with cyclists if they have respect for other people but I have been struck at least 12 times recently and once ended up in hospital with broken ribs.
Also my children were hit by a cyclists who collided with their buggy. Fortunately they were not injured but were shaken up.
The second time they were hit was far worse when the cyclist approached from behind. We were oblivious. I have been hit this way many many times.

it's like saying stop driving faster than 65mph on the freeways

No, it's not. The guy shouldn't be recklessly speeding through pedestrian walkways with his bike. They are bound to hit someone.

The situation is more like a car driving 100mph in a suburban neighborhood near a school.

it's funny how people never look at it the other way, pedestrians watch out for speeding cyclists.
just like pedestrians watch out for cars passing by when they cross a un-signaled section.

Pedestrian's are not supposed to cross at "un-signaled" sections. Driver's need to look out for pedestrians because they're the ones zooming around with these big metallic death machines.

If you're going fast, and you can see that there are pedestrians near by, it's irresponsible to keep going fast. Even with that, you can tell if they notice you coming or not. I don't think pedestrians walking on sidewalks expect a zooming piece of metal to hurl toward their direction.

that's the thing about california, more registered "death machines" than weaklings(people)

Well, good for you Californians, but it's not the same at other places in the world.

Edit: But I do agree with you on the fact that having too many vehicles in this world come with a cost that is difficult to bear (talking about our environment). I can't wait for the dominance of vehicles run on alternative power sources.

I'm sorry to hear that and I do think it very inconsiderate of them to ride bicycles at a high speed on sidewalks. Many of the busy commercial lanes/main roads have bicycle lanes now so really, they need to change their routes.

Monkey, how ignorant are you?
Maybe an adult is capable of looking out for ignorant speeding cyclists and give way, yes.
Tell my 4 year old the same. Walking along happily like any normal kid, skipping singing then swaps sides to hold my other hand... BANG!!!! Neither he nor I heard or saw the cyclist coming, now I have to run 20 yards down the pavement to check my son who is now having what appears to be an a fit on the pavement as he squirms in pain and is barely conscious.
Monkey, I'm not a vindictive person but when people like you make retarded comments like you do I really wish it would happen to you or your siblings or children. maybe then there will be a lesson learned.
Pavements are for pedestrians - full stop!
I have never had a problem with cyclists who take their time and respect pedestrians. It is the wanton cyclists who are the problem who THINK they can stop in time.
You mentioned pedestrians looking out and giving way... what happens when you are hit from behind? like I was.
Now I can no longer enjoy a casual walk as i am constantly looking over my shoulder in case ther is a cyclist approaching at speed.
Jeez I hate you Monkey you freakin' retard, you have just brought out the worsed in me and it's not good!!! Omg I wish i could meet you in real life, I'd force you to eat my bicycle piece by piece!!!

Sorry to hear that.... It's pretty reckless of them to be doing that to innocent pedestrians. They should get punished for it so they can learn to be more careful!
