Annoying Clients

So I have two clients. Let's call them Bob and Jim. They're partners.

I'm okay with Bob. He makes sense to me.

I hate Jim. Jim sucks. Well, let me back up, I don't "hate" Jim. He's just very annoying.

So, Bob tells me that there's this thing that we need to have done before the end of the day, because it's super important (so he tells me at least). I tell him I'm on it, then he promptly gets out of my way allowing me to get it done fast.

Jim, who knows the situation, stops me and asks if I can get something else done (something clearly not as important). So I tell him that it's going to need to happen some time after this particularly important task, and I explain to him the urgency of this task and what it could mean if it doesn't happen on time. I always need to drill these things into this guy's head for some reason. He says ok, he understands.

Now, I'm okay with Jim's actions at this point, but knowing Jim, he's going to find a way to raise my blood pressure. Guaranteed. I know, because this won't be the first time.

So I'm at a critical point in the process, and I'm working feverishly fast when my phone rings. "Oh, it's Jim," I think to myself, "it must be important for him to call me at this time." So, I pick up.

Me: "Hello, Jim."

Jim: "Hi Anonymous, how are you doing?"

Me: "I'm fine, Jim, what's up?"

Jim: "Oh, nothing much. Listen, umm, so, do you think we'll have that thing done by today? In your opinion, I mean, do you think it will be done and ready by the end of the day, because it is very important, and it would be great if it can be done by then. I mean, not great, but we need it done. Please. Will it be done by the end of the day? In your opinion, of course?"

Me: "Yes, Jim, it will."

Jim: "Okay, good. You're positive? Right? Because this is very important and it needs to be done. Please. Are you positive?"

Me: "Yes, Jim."

Jim: "Good, good. That's what I like to hear."

Me: "Okay, Jim, if that's all you needed then I'll let you go 'cause I need to get ba..."

Jim: "Wait, wait. There was something else I'd like to discuss with you. Umm, you know that other thing I wanted you to do? How's that going? Did you make any progress on that? What's the status on that?"

Me: "Jim, I told you, I need to get this done first. This is urgent. I haven't started on the other thing, because this is more important, and it needs to be done by today."

Jim: "I see I see. I understand. Okay, yes that's right. You're right. I forgot about that. Just remember, it's very important that we get it done. So, the other thing, do you think you'll be able to finish today as well?"

Me: (It's already late by now, and I'm clearly trying to beat the clock here. This guy is getting on my nerves by now trying to push an unimportant request.) "No, Jim, it doesn't look like it, but I need to get back to work so I can meet this deadline."

Jim: "Okay, okay. I understand. You're right. So, umm, you are positive that we will have this by the end of that day, is that correct?"

Me (about to explode): "Yes, Jim!" (F***!!! if you keep talking to me like this I won't. Jeez!!)

I get several calls like this from Jim throughout the day. It gets annoying after the hundredth time.

Awwww! I know it's very annoying. But if it's something VERY important, then from a client's point of view, he'll want to be as reassured as possible. VERY reassured. When I read your rant, I immediately thought of family members in a hospital anxiously waiting for their family member's surgery to be over with. Some family members are calmer, others are more understanding, and some have to keep asking questions and must continually be reassured. It's something to work on. But kudos for you for being patient with Jim and not exploding in his face. :)

Well, if he keeps at it then my "yes, it will happen" will turn into "no, it can't happen, because you've called me and interrupted me too many times"

Also, if it's so important to him, then he shouldn't keep pestering me about other non-important stuff while I'm trying to beat the clock.
